OUTDOOR AIR-QUALITY SENSOR

  • Arduino microcontroller
  • PMS5003 particulate matter sensor
  • BME280 temperature and humidity sensor
  • PVC cap enclosure, 3D-printed frame and clip

DETAILS

I opted for a simple PVC cap as the outer enclosure since many were already manufactured using UV and weather-resistant materials and avoided the complexity of 3D printing with different plastics. Within the enclosure, I designed a custom frame in Fusion 360 that would house the Arduino microcontroller that processes and uploads all the data, the PMS5003 particulate matter sensor, and the BME280 temperature and humidity sensor. To mount the sensor, I also designed a small 3D printed mounting clip outside of the enclosure that could be used to elevate the sensor on a beam.

During assembly, all that was needed was hot glue and zip ties to secure the sensor on a beam. This was intentional, as I wanted to minimize the tools and technical experience required for students to assemble the sensor themselves.
